Google Business Profile Leads Outperform Paid: 2026 Report

Every quarter, marketing teams gather around the table to debate how to allocate spend across paid search, paid social, display, connected TV, and whatever the shiny new channel of the moment is. Someone presents a slide deck with CPCs and ROAS numbers. People argue about whether to shift budget from Meta to YouTube. It's a whole thing.

Meanwhile, one channel remains consistently overlooked: Google Business Profiles. It’s not the flashiest item in your toolbox, but it continues to do its job day in and day out. And the best part is that it’s completely free. There’s no need to fret over budget, bidding, or cost per click.

Not only is it free, but it may also be your top performer. Data from Invoca’s 2026 Lead Conversion Benchmarks Report, which analyzed over 70 million phone calls, reveals that GBP actually outperforms most paid channels for multi-location businesses. Yet, most teams aren’t even tracking these leads. It’s time to give this powerhouse channel the credit it deserves.

In this post, we’ll cover what Google Business Profiles are, why they matter, and the latest benchmark data about their performance.

What Are Google Business Profiles?

Let’s start with a quick refresher on what this channel is and how it works. If you manage marketing for business locations—whether you're a healthcare system, an automotive group, a home services brand, or any business with a physical footprint—your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a potential customer sees. It shows up at the top of local search results and in Google Maps, with your address, hours, phone number, reviews, and a click-to-call button.

It’s worth noting that Google recently added an extra step to accessing the “call now” button from business listings. Users must now click your business listing to see the click-to-call action, whereas it used to appear directly in the local 3-pack. Paid local service ads (LSAs) continue to retain the call now button in the ad, and this move may have been to drive more adoption of LSAs.

Google Business Profiles Punch Well Above Their Weight

In our recent Lead Conversion Benchmarks report, we broke down phone lead and conversion performance by marketing channel across 70 million calls. Let's look at how Google Business Profiles stack up:

When it comes to conversion rate, Google Business Profiles are neck-and-neck with the top paid channels. Calls coming in through these listings convert at 42%, which is right in line with what your paid campaigns are doing.

Why Google Business Profile Callers Are So Valuable

Why are Google Business Profiles so effective at driving leads? Take a moment to think about it from the customer's perspective.

Someone who finds your business through a Google Business Profile isn't browsing. They’re looking for a nearby business that can meet their needs right now. They ran a local search, saw your listing at the top of the results, and decided you looked like the right answer to their problem. They checked your hours, maybe skimmed your reviews, and then hit "call." That's a buyer who's done a meaningful amount of self-qualification before they ever pick up the phone.

Compare that to someone scrolling through the news who happens to see a display ad. They might call you out of curiosity, but they're not primed for an in-depth sales conversation. They weren't looking for you; you interrupted them. That gap in intent is exactly why Google Business Profile leads convert at such a higher rate: one person came looking for an answer, the other just happened to notice an ad.

This also explains the performance across industries. Looking at the Invoca benchmark data by industry, Google Business Profiles consistently drive strong lead rates:

Google Business Profile Lead Rate by Industry (2026)
Industry GBP Lead Rate
Automotive54%
Healthcare47%
Travel47%
Telecom44%
Consumer Services41%
Business Services40%
Home Services38%

Automotive stands out above the others: 54% of Google Business Profile calls are leads, the highest of any channel in that industry. For businesses that depend on customers finding local service options (think dealerships, service centers, urgent care clinics, or HVAC companies), this channel is generating some of your most valuable calls.

Why You’re Probably Not Measuring This Channel

Are you tracking the leads and conversions your Google Business Profiles drive? If you’re like most companies, then probably not.

Most marketing teams track their paid search ROAS, their social ad conversions, and their organic traffic. But the phone calls that come in from Google Business Profile listings often go unattributed—or worse, they get lumped into "direct.” That means marketing is missing credit for a meaningful chunk of the leads it generates. And without that visibility, it's difficult to optimize.

When teams get visibility into the calls their Google Business Profiles drive, they can take the right steps to enhance agent coaching and boost close rates.

How to Fully Capture the Value of Google Business Profiles

Getting more from your Google Business Profiles comes down to a few tactics:

1. Track the calls and what happens on them

If you're not tracking calls from your Google Business Profile listings, you're flying blind. A call tracking solution like Invoca lets you place trackable phone numbers on your listings so you can see exactly how many calls each location is driving, which ones are leads, and which ones convert. This data connects your Google Business Profile activity to real revenue outcomes, giving you something concrete to optimize against.

2. Optimize the listing

Lead quality starts with the listing. Accurate hours, up-to-date contact info, and strong reviews all influence whether a local searcher chooses you over the competitor two listings down. Reviews in particular are a key ranking factor, and they directly influence caller intent. Consider incentivizing reviews from happy customers to boost your ratings.

Pro Tip: Updating your listing no longer requires a dashboard—Google Gemini can now connect directly to your Google Business Profile. You can just ask Gemini to update your hours, make posts for you, even flag unhappy reviews.

3. Use conversation data to improve conversion

Once you know which calls are coming from Google Business Profiles, you can analyze those conversations to understand what's driving conversions and where leads are slipping away. Are your agents prepared for the specific questions these callers tend to ask? Are they asking for the appointment? AI-powered quality management can evaluate 100% of these calls at scale and flag coaching opportunities your team would otherwise miss.

4. Pass caller context to your agents

High-intent callers deserve a fast, relevant experience. With Invoca's PreSense technology, you can pass context from a caller's digital journey to your agents before the conversation starts, so they already know the caller found you through your Google Business Profile, what location they were looking at, and more. That context makes the conversations more personalized and improves conversion rates.

Don't Sleep on This Free Channel

Paid media will always be the backbone of demand generation for most businesses. But your Google Business Profiles shouldn’t be overlooked. They give you prime real estate at the top of the search engine results page, putting you in front of your audience the moment they're searching for your products or services. Because of this, they’re one of the highest performing channels in your mix.

The brands that figure this out will find a meaningful source of incremental revenue they didn't know they had. And unlike those other flashy channels, this one doesn't require a budget conversation at all.
